Amazon has begun another round of corporate job reductions, trimming fewer than 1,000 white collar roles, mostly in its Stores division. The move comes on top of nearly 30,000 jobs already eliminated since late 2025, and this time employees in India, the UK, and the US are among those affected.
The timing of the cuts coincided with Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days shopping event, adding to the shock for staff who learned of the changes through internal Slack channels. While the company confirmed the layoffs, it did not give an exact figure, saying only that the restructuring was meant to align the Stores business with its priorities.
For India, the impact is significant. Local employees in Amazon’s retail unit are directly affected, and the cuts add to wider concerns about job stability in the country’s tech and e commerce sectors. Earlier rounds of layoffs had already touched Amazon Web Services, including management roles, showing that the reductions are not confined to retail.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos explained the broader cuts in a recent interview, saying the company had expanded its workforce too aggressively during the pandemic when online shopping demand surged. As conditions normalized, Amazon was left with more staff than it needed. The company now presents the layoffs as part of a long term effort to streamline operations rather than a reaction to falling demand.
Artificial intelligence is also reshaping work inside Amazon. Routine tasks in software development and system maintenance are increasingly handled by AI tools, freeing engineers to focus on more complex problems. This shift is changing the mix of skills required, even as Amazon continues to hire selectively in areas it sees as strategically important.
For Indian employees, the latest cuts underline both the risks of global restructuring and the growing influence of AI in shaping the future of work.
