Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari’s endeavours have helped 54,000 people get jobs in Nagpur constituency, through a project called MIHAN, short for multi-modal international cargo hub and airport at Nagpur.

In the last six years itself, about 54,868 local people were employed in Nagpur. These jobs were created following the establishment of industries and development projects in Nagpur.

Nagpur is also an important city for its rail and air traffic because of its location. The work under the MIHAN project began in 2009, and by 2014 about 50,000 jobs were created for the area. Gadkari was also instrumental in setting up the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Nagpur.

Even after winning the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, and becoming a cabinet minister, he continued to pursue this project, which took a while to gain traction and attract investors. Both the private sector and the public sector had shown considerable interest in MIHAN.

More than 170 companies have invested in MIHAN and provided employment opportunities to the locals. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has employed 7,500 people from the area, Air India has employed 4,500 locals and HCL around 2,500.

A total of 36,407 jobs have been generated in the SEZ and 16,162 in the non-SEZ areas. Also, 2,299 people got jobs through the Central Facility Building MIHAN in the SEZ area. Local youth in Nagpur are expected to get more jobs under the project in the near future.
