Govt staff to get 10% off on BSNL landline, broadband connections

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-run telecom company, will offer all government employees a 10 per cent discount on BSNL landline or broadband internet or fibre to home internet plans. The Company already offers government employees a 5 per cent discount on their bills.

By increasing the discount to 10 per cent, BSNL hopes to sustain its customer base and also attract new customers from the government sector.

This offer can help BSNL recover from the losses that it has been incurring for some time now and stabilise its position in the market, where competition from private-sector companies has increased.

All government departments have already been directed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to use only the landline and broadband internet services offered by BSNL or Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL). This is expected to boost the business of state-run companies as government departments are not allowed to opt for private service providers.

The employees’ union of BSNL has urged the Company’s chairman and MD to interact with the unions on a regular basis and come up with strategies to revive the firm. The Union has pointed out the fact that it was the hard work of the staff, their additional hours and active involvement of the employees in the Company’s initiatives that helped BSNL increase its subscriber base through the launch of ‘night free calling’ and free roaming throughout India.
