IndiGo has asked its senior employees to go on compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to four days every month till September 2021. This move has been taken because passenger traffic has dipped amidst the second wave of the pandemic that is raging across India.

To cope with the reduced capacity, the Airline has rolled out a leave without pay programme for all staff members. On the basis of the employee class or category they belong to, the employees will have to take compulsory LWP for 1.5 to 4 days a month.

Those employees belonging to bands A and B, the lowest bands, will not be included in this LWP programme. All pilots will take three days of LWP for three months, that is, till August, 2021.

During the first wave too, in 2020, the airline had imposed leave without pay, but had withdrawn the same when there were signs of a recovery.

However, ever since the second wave swept across the country this year, domestic travel has again fallen drastically.

IndiGo was also recently in the news when a consumer court in Karnataka ordered the airline to pay a compensation of Rs 1.6 lakh to Bengaluru teen who had to miss a dream visit to NASA, US, owing to some issues with the ticket. The airline was asked to cough up Rs 1 lakh as compensation and Rs 50,000 for causing mental agony to the student. IndiGo was also required to pay Rs 10,000 towards the teenager’s litigation and Rs 8,605 with interest towards refund of his ticket.
