Sony accused of discriminating against a Black employee

A former black employee of Sony Corp., Duwanikia “Monica” Hill, has sued the Company for discriminating against her and the Black community. She alleges being subjected to racial slurs and claims her work was sabotaged after she complained to the human resources department about the lack of any sympathy or support from the management. Ultimately, Hill was terminated when she asked to be a part of a Sony-produced video for Black History Month.

As per Hill, she was just hired to meet the diversity quota at the Company and was fired for speaking up against the discriminatory practices at the firm. Her law firm states that as part of the retaliation, Hill’s reputation was intentionally destroyed and her job performance records were damaged. In addition, she met with hostility constantly and false statements were spread about her without her knowledge.

Interestingly, Sony does not have any ‘Black’ member as part of the board and only has one Black top executive in its ranks.

As per Hill, the diversity and inclusion agenda that Sony appears to embrace in its marketing communication does not exist at all in reality.

The complaint also states that Hill’s manager passed discriminatory comments such as, ‘the ‘Black lives matter’ movement has given more power to the Black community and they should be grateful for it.’

Sony of course maintains that it is firm on its commitment towards diversity and inclusion, and takes complains in this area rather seriously.
