With heatwave conditions intensifying across Punjab, the state government has revised working hours for government offices and educational institutions in an effort to reduce public exposure to extreme temperatures. The new schedule came into effect on Monday, 25 May, following rising temperatures and forecasts suggesting prolonged heat conditions.
Under the revised arrangement announced by the government, government offices, service centres, and educational institutions across the state will now function from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until further notice. The change applies to government-run institutions as well as aided and private schools.
The move has received a positive response from employees and officials, many of whom see it as a practical response to the challenging weather conditions. The revised timing is expected to help people avoid commuting and working during the hottest hours of the day while also easing pressure on electricity consumption.
The shift is said to reduce dependence on air conditioning during peak daytime temperatures, particularly as electricity demand tends to rise sharply during heatwaves. Employees also viewed the early schedule as a measure that could provide relief and improve comfort during working hours.
District administrations have begun implementing the revised schedule across Punjab. Furthermore, efforts are being made to ensure that the transition remains smooth and that public services continue without disruption.
The decision was reportedly taken keeping both public health and energy conservation in mind. Weather forecasts indicate that extreme temperatures may continue over the coming days, making preventive steps increasingly important.
Punjab has been among several northern states experiencing severe heatwave conditions in recent days, prompting governments and local administrations to introduce measures aimed at protecting citizens and managing rising energy demand.
