While Amazon is set to hire 2.5 lakh people for full-time and part-time positions for its fulfillment centres and transportation divisions, Target will be adding one lakh people to its seasonal team.

Together, the two companies will provide 3,50,000 seasonal jobs this holiday season. Amazon will invest over $1 billion to increase the average hourly wages for its seasonal hires.

Amazon plans to hike the hourly wages to $28 per hour on average. Minimum hourly wage will be $17. It may go up to $28 depending on the location the employee is working in. Some new hires may even earn bonuses of at least $1,000, going up to $3,000. This hiring spree is also attributed to Amazon’s plans to expand its next-day delivery team.

In 2019, Amazon had vowed to hire 2 lakh season employees, while in 2022 it had hired about 1.5 lakh seasonal workers. Target had pledged to employ one lakh seasonal workers in 2021.

It is pertinent to mention here that earlier this year Amazon had laid off 27,000 employees, that is, almost nine per cent of its workforce. However, it also launched quite a few fulfillment centres and delivery stations across the US this year.

Gearing up for the holiday shopping spree, Target has already announced rebates starting October. In 2022, Target posted a revenue of $31.4 billion in Q4, which was almost $5 billion more than what it had earned in Q3.
