    Mozilla restructures; cuts 5% workforce

Mozilla, the creator of the Firefox web browser, is undergoing a restructuring process led by its new CEO, Laura Chambers. The restructuring is said to impact five per cent of its workforce, that is, about 60 roles.

The job cuts will mainly affect the product- development team within the company.
The decision was communicated to employees on Tuesday, 13 February, 2024, in an internal memo. Mozilla stated that this move is aimed at scaling back investments in certain product areas to prioritise those with higher potential for success.

The restructuring follows the recent appointment of Laura Chambers, a former executive from Airbnb and eBay, as CEO. Mitchell Baker, Mozilla’s long-time chief, has transitioned to the role of executive chairman. The company intends to refocus its resources on products such as Firefox Mobile, identifying significant growth opportunities and aiming to establish a more effective industry model.

This decision comes a week after Chambers assumed the role of CEO, and it coincides with a broader trend of tech industry layoffs, which have already seen over 32,000 job cuts this year.

Mozilla, a not-for-profit organisation develops the Firefox web browser and promotes an open and accessible internet. Alongside Firefox, Mozilla offers other products such as the Thunderbird email software and the Pocket article-saving app.

Known for its commitment to privacy and security, Mozilla advocates an open web, free from monopolistic control.
