Replit, a startup in generative artificial intelligence (AI) coding tools, has announced a significant reduction in its workforce. The company has announced to lay off 30 employees, constituting nearly 20 per cent of its staff.
The news was shared by Amjad Masad, CEO, Replit, in an email to employees, which was later posted on X (formerly Twitter).

In his message, Masad acknowledged the difficult decision to part ways with 30 “exceptional colleagues”, emphasising that the move was necessary for Replit to achieve its long-term goals and mission. At the time of the layoffs, Replit employed about 170 people, according to data from PitchBook.

Masad’s email did not specify which departments were affected. Additionally, the mail highlighted and assured that all impacted employees would receive four months of severance pay and waived vesting cliffs for stock options. Additionally, laid-off employees can retain their company laptops. Masad reiterated that Replit’s mission is to make programming more accessible, integrating AI into every facet of their platform.

Replit has garnered attention for its innovative browser-based integrated development environment (IDE), which simplifies the setup process for developers compared to traditional desktop applications. This ease of access has contributed to Replit’s popularity, boasting over 20 million users.

The company has recently intensified its focus on integrating generative AI into its tools. Last month, Replit launched “Replit Teams”, an AI-driven product akin to GitHub’s Copilot. This tool provides real-time code suggestions and error fixes, reflecting Replit’s belief in AI’s potential to revolutionise coding.

Replit’s layoffs are part of a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, and GitHub have also reduced their workforces in recent years.
