Employees of the Apple store, situated in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal are demanding $30 per hour as minimum wage. Fruit Stand Workers’ United, as the Apple workers’ union is called, has made new updates on its website with demands that also include, health and safety research, and better education and retirement benefits.
The Union is asking for the pay to be calculated using a matrix based on role, tenure and performance. It also wants the Company to “conduct research into security protocols with customer interactions, and research into health effects from building materials, and noise pollution at Grand Central”.
Organisers of the union at Apple Grand Central are also handing out signature cards to the employees so that they can show their interest in forming a union. The organisers will be able to sign a petition with the National Labour Relations Board to hold a union election, if at least 30 per cent of the employees sign the cards.
“Grand Central is an extraordinary store with unique working conditions that make a union necessary to ensure our team has the best possible standards of living in what have proven to be extraordinary times,” the website states.
According to reports, there are at least three other Apple locations that are now looking to form a union.
