With the objective of drawing more technology professionals to the country, Canada has introduced an all new work permit programme, called Tech Talent Strategy. It will benefit those individuals who currently possess H-1B visas in the US.

Introduced by Sean Fraser, minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, this work permit will allow H-1B visa holders from the US to apply for a Canadian work permit. It will also offer study and work permit options for their family members travelling with them. Successful applicants will not only get an unrestricted work permit for up to three years but will also be allowed to work for any employer in Canada. Additionally, their spouses and dependent family members can apply for temporary resident visas.

As per media reports, the initiative is aimed at pulling individuals capable of contributing to establishing Canada as a global frontrunner in various emerging technologies. The permit will be in effect starting 16 July, 2023.

This provision will be in effect for one year or until a total of 10,000 applications are received by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Additionally, the application limit applies only to the principal applicants and not the family members with them.

Along with the permit, Canada will also introduce a specialised draw for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)  fields, which will issue additional invitations to apply under the Express Entry programme.

As part of the initiative, a new Innovation Stream will be established under the International Mobility Programme to draw individuals with exceptional talent.

The programme will include enhancements to the Start-up Visa Programme.
