On 15 January 2024, Stellantis, the car manufacturer, announced plans to temporarily lay off approximately 2,250 employees at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. According to union reports, in the coming weeks, layoffs are expected due to a decline in demand.
1,250 workers working on the electric Fiat 500 and 1000 workers manufacturing Maserati models will be impacted by this layoff. The layoffs will apply from 12 February 2024, to 3 March 2024.
Unions are worried about the upcoming job cuts and want to talk with the company soon.
In September 2023, the company announced that it would let go of nearly 2,400 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Italy between 19 October and 3 November, in response to slow demand.
Apart from Italy, on 15 January 2024, Stellantis NV announced that 539 temporary workers in its US factories are being let go permanently after a review of operations. The affected workers, who were notified on 12 January 2024, are lower-paid temporary employees from General Motors and Ford Motor.
Stellantis said that it often checks how many people it needs at its factories to make sure things are running well. This move is meant to make the facilities work better, be more productive, and stay competitive in the market. It’s all part of the Dare Forward 2030 plan to improve and grow.
This reduction in the workforce is immediate, and the workers won’t get extra unemployment benefits. The company is making these changes as part of its efforts to transform into a company focused on electric vehicles, which are more expensive to make, after signing a deal with the United Auto Workers.
