While there is no dearth of jobs for the unemployed in Punjab, these jobs offer very little in terms of pay. Over two lakh jobs are available in the private sector, but these will pay only about Rs 5000 to Rs 15000 a month.

The Punjab government is into its fifth edition of the mega job fairs organised under the Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Karobar Mission. The fairs that began in the second week of this month, and will be on till the end of September, invite job seekers to walk in for interviews for the 2,10,614 openings in the private sector.

Openings in the field of teaching, medicine and engineering are rare. As per data received from the employment websites, the maximum number of openings are for drivers, helpers, welders, fitters, and electricians.

The maximum opportunities have been posted by Ludhiana, with a total of 45,559 openings. About 4,000 vacancies are for helpers with a monthly salary between Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000. About 2,000 jobs for are also on offer at a monthly salary of approx. Rs 8,000. The highest pay on offer is for manager (financial planning) with Rs 20,000 per month with additional incentive.

While about 400 jobs are on offer in Mohali for Rs 3.5 lakh per annum, most of the jobs are offering a package of only Rs 6000 to Rs 10,000 a month.

The first two job fairs did not receive a very good response, with less than 8500 people being placed.
