In an attempt to ensure that its customers across the world enjoy a seamless online shopping experience, Amazon India is offering almost 20,000 temporary jobs in its customer-service wing, most of which will allow work from home. The e-commerce company is expecting a spike in the number of online shoppers in the next six months, and will be hiring temporary staff in Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur, Noida, Chandigarh, Mangaluru, Indore, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Pune and Coimbatore.

Amazon India is primarily hiring people for its ‘Virtual Customer Service’ programme, which will allow the new hires the flexibility to work from home. These new ‘associates’ will provide customer support via e-mail, chat, social media and phone. Even those who have passed Class 12 may apply, provided they are fluent in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or Kannada.

The new recruits may also be absorbed into the Company permanently by the end of the year, if they are found to be performing well and if the business so requires.

In May, Amazon India had announced its intention to add 50,000 seasonal roles across its warehouses and delivery network to be able to handle the deluge of online shoppers post lifting of the lockdown. The number of online shoppers is expected to increase with the fast-approaching holiday/festival season.

These jobs come as a huge relief to many at a time when people are battling uncertainties and many companies have been forced to shrink their workforces rendering thousands jobless.

Earlier this year, Amazon had revealed plans to create 10 lakh new jobs in India in the next five years, by continuing to invest in technology, infrastructure, and its logistics network.
