The Ministry of Labour and Employment announced on October 9, that over 3 crore people from the unorganised sector have registered on the e-Shram portal — the National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW), which is the first of its kind in the country.

The portal is aimed at simplifying the process of dissemination of benefits from various government schemes and making it more convenient for workers who have registered on it, as informed by Union Minister for Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav in a tweet.

The scheme will see each worker receiving an amount of Rs 58,400. A total of about Rs 6,08,41,600 will be distributed amongst the people employed in the informal sector by the Government.

The release of the Labour Ministry was read at the 177th Governing Body Meeting and 78th Annual General Body meeting of the Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education and Development, an autonomous body under the Ministry, in Hyderabad.

The government portal was unveiled about a month ago and aims to build a pan-India comprehensive database of the unorganised workforce, including construction labourers, migrant workers, street vendors and domestic workers, among others. At the time of the announcement, Yadav asserted that the platform will see registration from an estimated 38 crore people. The people registered with the portal will get a new e-Shram card with a unique 12-digital number.

With this portal, the Government will integrate social welfare schemes for workers in coordination with states and trade unions.
