The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) under the Ministry of Steel have managed to employ more than 35000 people who were displaced due to the setting up of steel plants by these two public-sector steel manufacturing companies.
Against the commitment of 5000, almost 7845 people were employed by the Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant of RINL, while 4468 were taken on at the Bhilai Steel Plant under SAIL. Another 6486 were taken on at the Rourkela Steel Plant, followed by 16000 at the Bokaro Steel Plant and 214 at the Salem Steel Plant.
The Government claims that all the displaced people were given jobs in regular grades in the pay scales meant for the grades and offered wages as per Company Rules.
In addition, the 16850 people identified as displaced at the Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant have been rehabilitated in four colonies developed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. These colonies have been provided street lights, roads, drinking water as well as health centres and schools.
These people were displaced when land was acquired according to the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, to set up public-sector plants.
