On 28 January 2024, the Government of Kerala declared an increase in salary for around 60,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers in the state. K N Balagopal, finance minister, shared that those who have worked for more than ten years will receive an additional Rs 1000 in their salary. The wages of other workers will be raised by Rs 500.
This decision means that a total of 60,232 workers and helpers will enjoy the benefits of these increments. It’s a way for the government to recognise and appreciate the hard work and dedication of these individuals by providing them with a financial boost in their monthly earnings.
Anganwadi workers and helpers in the state currently receive a monthly salary of Rs 12,000 and Rs 8,000, respectively. The government has decided to increase their wages, and this change will be applicable from December 2023 onwards.
The new, higher wages will be given to them retrospectively, meaning they will also receive the increased pay for the months that have already passed since December 2023.
In Kerala state, there are a total of 33,115 Anganwadis, which are centres providing various health and nutrition services for children and mothers.
These Anganwadis operate under 258 Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The government’s statement indicates that the revised wages will benefit all the Anganwadi workers and helpers across these centres.
