Bob Moore, the visionary founder of Bob’s Red Mill, departed this world at the age of 94 on 10 February, 2024. Renowned for its wholesome grain products and unique approach to employee relations, his company stands as a testament to his commitment to a different kind of business ethos.
Breaking away from the conventional path of selling out to a food conglomerate, Moore bestowed full ownership of the company upon his 700 employees, creating a distinct ownership structure. This move, as reported by Fortune, showcased his dedication to avoiding the profit-centric approach typical in the corporate world.
This wasn’t the first time Moore exhibited his unconventional spirit. In 2010, on his 81st birthday, he initiated an employee stock ownership plan for his then 209 employees, laying the foundation for a truly employee-centric organisation. By April 2020, the company had grown to 700 workers, all sharing ownership, realising Moore’s vision well before his passing.
Moore always emphasised the principle of treating others as one would want to be treated oneself—a philosophy he believed everyone should live by.
In 2018, Moore referred to Bob’s Red Mill as ‘an absolute dream come true.’ Resisting numerous tempting offers to sell the company, he stood firm, defending his vision against sceptics who couldn’t fathom his reluctance.
Despite officially retiring in 2018, Moore remained on the company’s board until his passing. Reflecting on his successful journey, he attributed it to always staying true to his “true north” amidst life’s ups and downs. Traveling the world, enjoying success, and managing finances wisely, he emphasized the importance of having a purpose.
In the wake of Moore’s passing, the company shared a heartfelt message, declaring how his passion, ingenuity, and respect for others will forever inspire the employee-owners of Bob’s Red Mill.
