The cries of a newborn can be both joyous and terrifying, especially for new parents juggling the demands of parenthood with the pressures of work. In India, where traditional gender roles often place childcare squarely on mothers’ shoulders, this tightrope walk can be particularly challenging. But Colgate-Palmolive India is throwing a lifeline to new parents, with a revamped parental leave policy that’s rewriting the rules of the game.
Gone are the days of a measly four-week leave for “supportive caregivers” (read: dads). Colgate-Palmolive India is now offering a whopping 12 weeks of paid leave to all new parents, irrespective of gender or parental role. Whether it’s a birth parent, an adoptive parent, or a parent welcoming a child through surrogacy, this policy extends a helping hand to everyone.
This industry-first move is a game-changer. It recognises the crucial role fathers play in a child’s early development, allowing them precious bonding time during those first, formative months. No more scrambling to use up vacation days or feeling guilty about missing out on those precious first smiles. With the new policy, dads can be active participants in parenthood, not just sideline supporters.
“This policy change is one step further in our journey of making Colgate a more inclusive workplace. Becoming a parent is often a daunting & life-changing event and through this move, we want to promote shared parenting – where both the partners get a chance to be a part of the child’s infancy journey and can support each other in early childcare, without work-related anxieties.”

But Colgate-Palmolive isn’t stopping there. The company understands that flexibility is key. The 12 weeks can be taken in chunks, with a maximum of two months per tranche. This allows parents to tailor their leave to their specific needs, whether it’s taking extended time right after birth or spreading it out to manage childcare during the first year. Additionally, the timeframe for availing this leave has been stretched to a full year after the arrival of the child, giving parents more breathing room to adjust.
This progressive policy isn’t just about warm fuzzies. Colgate-Palmolive India, with its commitment to diversity and inclusion, recognises that a happy workforce is a productive workforce. By alleviating the burden on new mothers and encouraging fathers to be active participants, the company hopes to retain top talent and create a more balanced work-life experience for everyone. The policy also dovetails with their WIN (Workplace Inclusivity) program, offering additional remote work options for new parents.
Balaji Sreenivasan, executive vice-president, HR, Colgate-Palmolive India, expressed, “This policy change is one step further in our journey of making Colgate a more inclusive workplace. Becoming a parent is often a daunting & life-changing event and through this move, we want to promote shared parenting – where both the partners get a chance to be a part of the child’s infancy journey and can support each other in early childcare, without work-related anxieties.”
Colgate-Palmolive India’s revamped parental leave policy is a beacon of hope for working parents in India. Its a bold statement that prioritises shared responsibility, flexibility, and, ultimately, the well-being of both employees and their families. In the world of parenthood, where teamwork makes the dream work, this company is changing the diaper game, one progressive policy at a time.

This is definitely not the industry first move. Goldman Sachs India offers 6 months paternity leave.
