Anganwadi workers to protest poor work conditions

Anganwadi workers across Mumbai plan to march towards Azad Maidan wearing masks of Savitribai Phule in an attempt to bring notice to the poor working conditions they are subjected to and the failure in implementing several long standing demands.

Anganwadi workers are the supplementary healthcare force in their communities, collecting and collating data on various government schemes, spreading disease control awareness, and supporting maternal and child health.

They have been fighting to be recognised as government employees with benefits like gratuity, retirement benefits and better pay.

MA Patil, president of the State Anganwadi Workers’ Association, said the workers were given phones to track the nutrition status of the women and children in the community. These phones are not compatible with the app the government uses, which is why many of these workers are forced to buy new smartphones to complete their tasks.

Patil did not fail to mention the dire state of the working conditions of the anganwadi workers. The workers plan to march to Azad Maidan on January 3, 2023 and will stay there until they meet the chief minister, Eknat Shinde.
