In a significant move to bolster India’s green transition, Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) and the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ) have joined forces. The partnership, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in March 2024, aims to develop a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of the burgeoning renewable energy sector.
This collaboration marks a critical milestone for India’s clean energy ambitions. The country has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and installing 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. To achieve these goals, a skilled workforce is paramount.
SCGJ, established under the National Skill Development Mission, serves as a bridge between stakeholders in the green energy sector. By combining SCGJ’s expertise with Tata Power’s experience in skilling through TPSDI, the partnership will leverage best practices to design and deliver targeted training programmes.
The initiative will encompass specialised programmes, knowledge sharing, and capacity building. Notably, the rollout of Green Hydrogen Labs and solar training programs will enhance practical skill development. Joint certification and accreditation will ensure program credibility and industry alignment.
This collaboration strengthens Tata Power’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. With over 1 lakh individuals already trained through TPSDI’s network of six centres, Tata Power is well-positioned to contribute significantly to India’s green skilling efforts.
“The MoU with SCGJ signifies a crucial step in our mission to revolutionise the green energy sector,” said Himal Tewari, CHRO, Tata Power. “We are confident that this collaboration will cultivate a skilled green workforce to meet India’s growing demand for clean energy professionals.”
The SCGJ echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts. “Together, we are opening doors to capacity building and entrepreneurship in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and research & development,” a spokesperson remarked.
The MoU underscores the shared commitment of both institutions to building a future-ready workforce for the green economy. By establishing joint training programmes across India, they aim to equip individuals with the skills necessary to lead India’s transition towards a sustainable future.
