The West Bengal government is offering jobs to the kin of those COVID warriors who have lost their lives working from the frontlines or have been rendered debilitated.
Considering that West Bengal is amongst the states most affected by the pandemic, this benefit from the state government comes as a big motivator to the COVID warriors.
Lives of hundreds of frontline workers, including doctors, nurses and policemen have been lost to the pandemic. Their families are already being paid a compensation of Rs 10 lakh by the state government. In addition, the kin of the deceased will now be able to get a government job. This will be a huge financial support to the families of the COVID warriors, who have sacrificed their lives while battling the disease or have become incapacitated while doing so.
The expenses towards the treatment of frontline workers infected with the virus are already being borne by the state government.
The scheme will be officially known as ‘The West Bengal Special Compassionate Appointment (to the dependent of COVID Warrior who has died or has been permanently incapacitated due to Covid-19) Scheme, 2020’.
West Bengal has so far recorded more than 1,10,000 cases of COVID-19 out of which over 80,000 patients have recovered in the state while the death toll stands at 2319.
