Walmart India aims to create 30,000 jobs in Uttar Pradesh

Prime Minister Modi launches 81 projects worth Rs 60,000 crore, during the mega ground-breaking event.

As part of its expansion plans, Walmart India intends to create 30,000 jobs in Uttar Pradesh. The retail giant considers Uttar Pradesh a priority state and will set up around 15 stores there. The
Company already runs four cash and carry stores in the State and recently launched a fulfilment centre (FC) in its capital, Lucknow, which created 1,500 new skilled jobs.

Walmart India had already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Government during the Uttar Pradesh Investment Summit held early this year. “Each store is likely to create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, generating at least 30,000 local jobs in the State,” said chief corporate affairs officer, Rajneesh Kumar, who represented Walmart India at the Investment Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched 81 projects worth Rs 60,000 crore by companies, such as Walmart, Reliance, Adani, Mahindra, PayTm, TCS and GAIL.

During the mega ground-breaking event in Lucknow, Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took stock of the progress in implementation of the MoUs signed during the Investment Summit.

According to Kumar, Walmart is investing deeply in the agriculture supply chain, enhancing small farmers’ capabilities and sourcing from them for its stores in not just Uttar Pradesh, but other states as well. Their cash and carry stores and FC in Lucknow, will not just create new jobs, but also support and enable small kiranas, farmers and local SME suppliers.

In addition to the existing stores and FC at Lucknow, Agra and Meerut, Walmart aims to establish wholesale cash and carry stores in Varanasi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Gorakhpur and other cities. Kumar said these stores will go on to become a great platform for saree weavers in Varanasi and artisans, who struggle for market access.

Kumar pointed out that the Company will also help create an ecosystem for these artisans, just like it has been able to do with small farmers and other small suppliers in Uttar Pradesh and other states.
