About 500 sacked by Bangalore University; Union blames NEP implementation

Protesting the recent firing of 497 outsourced employees by the Bangalore University, the All India University Employees Confederation (AIUEC) has pointed out that it is in all probability, a repercussion of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). The University gave no prior notice to these employees before announcing their termination.

The terminated employees have decided to protest against the decision of the varsity on campus. The majority who have been rendered jobless following the order are non-teaching staff of the Group C and D cadre. In an order, the varsity’s registrar (admin), stated that the recruitment of the employees was carried out without prior permission from the Government as mandated by the rules of the Karnataka State Universities Act.

The order also stated that a majority of the recruits were not qualified for the posts and some of the recruitments even violated the reservation policy.

The general secretary, AIUEC, called this termination an attack on employees and a repercussion of NEP-2020 implementation, which is aimed at removing the power of public-funded educational institutions and encouraging privatisation of education.

According to media reports, those close to the matter revealed that the severance order was long pending and BU was directed by the Higher Education Department to carry it out as soon as possible. The varsity’s syndicate is reported to have been informed back in April that the employment of the outsourced staff would be extended for six months, after which the severance order was issued.
