TI’s WiSH programme nurtures affinity for semiconductors among female students

Texas Instruments (TI) has announced the commencement of the second year of its Women in Semiconductors and Hardware (WiSH) initiative. This month-long mentoring programme aims to support female engineering students in India, encouraging them to pursue careers in the semiconductor and hardware industries. The programme provides valuable exposure, mentorship, and guidance to empower women in their engineering pursuits.

This year, TI is hosting 100 students from 22 colleges, doubling the number of participants compared to 2022.

Santhosh Kumar, president and managing director, Texas Instruments India, emphasised the significant gender gap in STEM fields, with only 14 percent of women currently part of the workforce in India. The WiSH programme endeavours to bridge this gap, inspiring more women to enter the semiconductor industry and driving transformation in the industry’s prevailing dynamics.

Students will engage in simulation projects, visit labs, participate in technical discussions, and network with TI’s leaders in this programme. They will also benefit from virtual mentoring sessions conducted over three weeks, culminating in an in-person mentoring experience at TI’s Bangalore campus during the final week.

Kumar further highlighted the programme’s goal of nurturing an affinity for semiconductors among female students early in their professional journeys. By offering hands-on experiences and encouraging their connection with science and technology, TI hopes to foster their interest in engineering and technology careers.

The WiSH programme received an overwhelming response this year, with 950 applications received. Second-year female engineering students are particularly encouraged to apply, as the initiative seeks to empower them with the necessary information to make well-informed career decisions at an early stage of their lives.
