    Unemployment rate rises from 8% to 8.30% in Dec. 2022

    As per the data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), the unemployment rate in India has risen from 8 per cent to 8.30 per cent in December. This is the highest in 16 months.

    Unemployment rate was lowest in Odisha in December 2022, at 0.9 per cent, while it was the highest in Haryana, at 37.4 per cent.

    While the employment rate has gone up to 37.1 per cent, the urban unemployment rate has risen from 8.96 per cent in November to 10.09 per cent in December. The rural unemployment rate, on the other hand, decreased from 7.55 per cent to 7.44 per cent.

    The positive thing is that labour participation rate has gone up and reached 40.48 per cent in December, which is the highest in 12 months.

    The employment rate in December is the highest in the year 2022.

    In the July-September quarter, the unemployment rate had dropped to 7.2 per cent, from 7.6 per cent in the previous quarter, as per the data from the National Statistical Office (NSO).

    Haryana witnessed a rise in unemployment rate to 37.4 per cent in December 2022. Rajasthan’s jobless rate rose to 28.5 per cent, while the figure for Delhi increased to 20.8 per cent in Delhi. Bihar recorded an unemployment rate of 19.1 per cent, while the rate for Jharkhand was 18 per cent.

    Other states that recorded low unemployment rates were, Gujarat with 2.3 per cent, Karnataka with 2.5 per cent, Meghalaya with 2.7 per cent and Maharashtra with 3.1 per cent.
