Birmingham airport staff accept 13.25% pay rise, ending strike action

More than 150 employees at Birmingham Airport, including security officers and terminal technicians, have accepted a significant pay rise of 13.25 per cent, effectively bringing an end to all planned strike actions.

The one-year pay agreement comprises a 10.5 per cent consolidated increase along with an additional 2.75 per cent non-consolidated raise. As part of the deal, the trade union Unite, which represented the workers, will have two new workplace representatives, and a broader collective bargaining agreement will be established. The union will also be granted increased access for organising purposes across the airport.

Previously, there was a looming threat of an indefinite strike set to commence on July 18th. However, this action was put on hold to allow members to vote on the proposed offer. If the offer had been rejected, the strikes would have commenced on August 1, impacting crucial operations at Birmingham Airport and causing disruptions for various airlines, such as Tui, EasyJet, Wizz, Ryanair, Lufthansa, and Emirates.

A spokesperson from Birmingham Airport expressed the company’s eagerness to resolve the issue through the established bargaining agreement with Unite. They engaged the dispute conciliation service, Acas, for mediation, a method that has proven successful in nine out of ten cases.

Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite, praised the determination and unity of the Birmingham airport workers, which ultimately led to securing this favorable deal. Unite’s steadfast focus on improving job conditions and wages has once again yielded positive results for its members.

Additionally, Birmingham Airport offers its staff various benefits, such as participation in an employee share ownership scheme, a group personal pension plan, on-site parking at discounted rates, a childcare vouchers program, and a discretionary bonus tied to company performance. Moreover, employees can enjoy up to 25 per cent off on bus and train tickets through the Travelwise scheme, discounts on retail and dining establishments within the airport, as well as reduced travel and holiday offers. Health referral services, including occupational health and counseling, are also available to support the well-being of the staff.
