Amazon India has introduced the Women in Night Shifts (WINS) initiative at one of its major Sort Centres in Haryana. WINS aims to establish a secure and supportive work environment for women, ensuring equal work opportunities for both genders across different shifts, and promoting inclusivity.
In certain Indian states, regulations historically restricted the employment of women during night shifts in warehousing facilities due to concerns about safety and wellbeing. To address this, Amazon India has prioritised safety, security and wellbeing as key components of the WINS initiative.
Amazon has implemented various safety measures, such as improved facility lighting, escorted pick-up and drop services, gender sensitisation trainings, and the deployment of female staff in supervisory and support roles.
Furthermore, the company has actively collaborated with state governments, successfully enabling night shift operations for women in states such as Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, and now, in Haryana.
Liju Thomas, director-HR, India operations, Amazon India, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and emphasised Amazon’s commitment to breaking down barriers for women in the workplace. “We prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our associates offering comprehensive measures, such as transportation facilities, and enhanced security arrangements for those working in night shifts. We intend to extend this initiative to other sites in Haryana, reinforcing our commitment to a diverse and secure work environment,” he added.
Continuing its commitment, Amazon India plans to work closely with government authorities to secure approvals for women to work night shifts at various locations. This initiative aligns with Amazon’s efforts to cultivate an inclusive culture and provide a safe working environment.
The company has consistently provided opportunities for women across its ecosystem, including seller partners, operations network partners, community beneficiaries, employees and associates. Amazon India’s various benefits, programmes, and initiatives underscore its dedication to women’s empowerment and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion within its organisational culture.
