In the wake of so many protests and demonstrations by the people in Assam, Director of Elementary Education of Assam Government is circulating a letter which says that, any government employee regular or contractual will face disciplinary actions if they have shared any political views on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp or Instagram during the protests.

The circular further says that it violates the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1961 and social media activities of Government employees is under vigilance.

Earlier this week, four lakh Assam Government employees ceased work to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The teachers and students were at the forefront to protest against the CAA.

People on social media are scrutinising the Government for this move. One of the tweets read, “Govt employees face disciplinary action for airing their views against CAA on social media in Assam. Approximately 4 lakh employees abstained for work on Dec 18th to protest CAA. This govt is scared! #NRC_CAA_Protest.”

On one hand, the government wants its employees to use the modern modes of communication, to stay updated, but at the same time it is curtailing freedom of speech in the context of ongoing CAA protests.

The protests took a violent shape earlier this month all over the country especially in Assam. Four people reportedly died in police firing.
