In a bid to provide a more inclusive environment to its delivery team, online food delivery company, Swiggy, has announced a two-day paid monthly period time-off policy for its women delivery partners.
Women who opt for the policy will receive minimum earnings for that day, no questions asked. The Company claims that this is the first of such initiatives taken in the industry at this time.
The policy will benefit the 1,000 women who are part of Swiggy’s 2,00,000-strong team of delivery partners.
In an official blog post, the Company said that discomfort while menstruating on the job is probably one of the most underreported reasons why many women do not consider delivery as a viable gig.
The blogpost further revealed that Swiggy onboarded its first woman delivery partner in Pune, back in 2016. Ever since, the Company has been striving to build an inclusive and diverse space for women riders.
The Company has also incorporated some other measures to foster a more equitable environment for its women delivery partners. It has partnered with petrol pump chain, Shell, to provide easy access to restrooms to its riders. Further, it has marked ‘safe zones’ for its women delivery partners in cities and had also capped delivery hours for them at 6 p.m., which was later revoked, as the move limited true inclusivity.
Starting with Bengaluru, Swiggy will be increasing its dinner slot deliveries very soon.
