Walmart to hire 1,50,000 store employees ahead of the festive season. It will take on at least 1,25,000 workers at its warehouses and for shipping. The labour market in the US is already tight, and these positions at Walmart, most of which will be permanent and full-time, will only add to the high competition.
These hires will be in addition to the 20,000 jobs that were announced by Walmart in its supply chain in August 2021. The openings included that of order fillers as well as freight handlers at the Company’s over 250 distribution centres and fulfilment centres, as well as transportation offices.
About three weeks ago, Walmart had decided to do away with quarterly bonuses, and raise the per hour wage for its employees instead.
The average hourly wage paid by Walmart in the US is now $16.40.
While many organisations hiked the wages for their employees to attract talent at a time when there is labour shortage, Walmart announced that it would cover the tuition fees and text book expenses of its employees who are pursuing courses.
It is anticipated that about seven lakh jobs will be created in the retail sector this festive season. However, this is still lower than pre-pandemic levels.
While Target is expected to employ about a lakh seasonal workers, FedEx and UPS are together expected to take on about 1,90,000 workers.
