The staff of state-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI), under the aegis of the AAI Employees Union has been protesting against the Government’s move to privatise six profit-making airports. Over a hundred airports are operated and managed by AAI in the country, which has a workforce of almost 16000 employees. In November this year, it was decided by the Government that the airports of Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Tiruvananthapuram, and Mangaluru will be managed under public private partnership.
Employees across the country raised their voice against the move. It is reported that the employees are planning to go on hunger strike starting from December 10, and later may even abstain from duty by taking casual leave.
