By March 30, General Motors intends to recruit 3,000 techies, for its virtual product testing and software as a service (SaaS) development teams. Of these, about 500 to 1,000 will be working remotely for its electric and autonomous vehicles development teams. Most of the openings will be at the Company’s technical centre near Detroit, Michigan.

The Company is on the lookout for electrical system and infotainment software engineers, as well as developers for platforms, such as Java, Android and, iOS. It will also focus on increasing diversity in the workforce, while hiring for positions at its technical centres, including those in Phoenix, Texas, Ontario and Atlanta

The new hires will be working on enhancing electrical capacity to ensure vehicle safety, infotainment and connectivity, as well as connectivity innovations along with over-the-internet vehicle-software updates.

The Company is aiming to bring out about 20 electric models to be sold across the globe by 2023. One of the models being planned is an SUV based on the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. The production of the same is scheduled to begin next summer. It has set itself a timeline of 18 months for the development of each electric vehicle. To attain that kind of speed, it has to have more people, which explains the hiring plan.

In addition, the Company is going to begin battery cell production. It has already started hiring people for its battery plant, Ultium Cells, which is coming up in Ohio.
