The new promoters of Jet Airways, the Jalan Kalrock Consortium, have conveyed to the staff of the airline that they cannot commit to re-employing all the 3,500 employees of Jet.

While the Consortium is going to begin meeting the employees to finalise their roles, it is sure that it will not be able to take on all of them right now. While it may consider doing so in the future, depending on various conditions and factors, it does not make any commitments.

Many factors will have to be considered, including the number of slots that will ultimately be given to the airline, the destinations it will serve, the aircraft that will be deployed, date of commencement of flights and various regulatory approvals.

A few days ago, The All India Jet Airways’ Officers & Staff Association had approached Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, seeking his intervention for the resolution of their issues.

The employees had been seeking payment of all social-security dues, including provident fund and gratuity. Among other things, they were also demanding assurance of employment for the existing employees on the payroll, numbering about 3,500.

Jalan Kalrock Consortium offered compensation including cash payments of Rs 11,000 to employees and Rs 22,800 to workmen. Additionally, the workmen would be given either a smartphone or a laptop or an iPad from the existing assets of the grounded airline. It also proposes to offer a

0.5 per cent equity stake in the airline for all staff members and workmen of Jet Airways and Rs 10,000 credits for future tickets to each former employee of Jet Airways 1.0. A welfare trust of the staff will be formed where the Consortium will transfer the 0.5 per cent stake, over and above the 76 per cent stake in its ground-handling subsidiary.
