With the holiday season fast approaching, Amazon.com is gearing to hire 150,000 employees in the US. It is looking for people to pick, pack, sort and ship orders. They will be hired for full-time as well as seasonal and part-time roles, to help tackle the rush and surge in demand during the festive season.
In certain locations, the Company will offer the new hires a sign-on bonus of up to $3,000. Amazon has already hiked the average wage to over $19 per hour. This is a dollar more than what it offered last year. It is hoped that the hike in hourly wages will pull more workers and also retain them.
Target is also expected to hire about one lakh seasonal workers, while Walmart has plans to take on about 40,000 seasonal and full-time employees.
Elsewhere, in Singapore, there seems to be huge demand for doctors. In fact, the country is planning to pick about 180 doctors from India over the next few years. The objective is to hire about 60 medical officers every year between 2022 and 2025. Doctors will also be hired from Britain and Australia.
Singapore is also looking to recruit about 4,000 people for its aviation sector by the end of the year. Looks like the country’s aviation space is progressing towards achieving 90 per cent of its pre-COVID employment.
Meanwhile, the software services industry is witnessing a slowdown in hiring. Indian tech firms had witnessed a hiring boom during the pandemic. However, now, the companies are cutting down on campus hiring. In fact, hiring will be cut down by about 20 per cent in FY 2022-23, as per a livemint.com report.
On a lighter note, all those with “gorgeous hands” and “a basic grasp of Greek and Latin” may apply for the role of “grape feeder” at a restaurant in London.
