GitHub’s developer strength in India has touched 15.4 million. How? The Microsoft-owned developer platform has onboarded 2.2. million more developers on its platform in India.
According to Thomas Dohmke, CEO, GitHub, there is a lot of updation and constant maintenance of software happening almost on a daily basis, because of the need to adapt to the latest technologies. The complexities increase manifold when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) systems, which has only increased the demand for software developers in India.
By 2027, that is, in the next three years, it is expected that the developer community in India on GitHub will be much larger than that of the US, which is presently 21 million strong.
Interestingly, the very same company had laid off 80 per cent of its India workforce in 2023.
Dohmke told ET that the layoff decision had nothing to do with India, and that the decision to cut jobs was based on the product areas the employees were assigned to.
He did reveal that most of the impacted employees were originally from Microsoft, and therefore, they were rehired by Microsoft itself.
With two lakh computer-science graduates passing out of engineering colleges, Dohmke believes that India has the potential to lead in the areas of software and AI.
As per a ToI report, Dohmke believes that it will not be long before children and adults across India would be learning to code in their native language.
