Why internships should be taken seriously

Internships have become a cornerstone of career development in today’s competitive job market. These valuable opportunities serve as a bridge between academic learning and practical experience, allowing individuals to gain crucial skills, make industry connections, and explore various career paths. While internships offer numerous advantages, it is important to understand both their benefits and potential drawbacks.

    Research and preparation

Ravi Mishra, SVP-HR, advanced materials business, Aditya Birla Group, emphasizes the need for interns to “be adequately prepared prior to embarking on an internship”. According to him, “Apart from possessing subjective and domain knowledge, interns should also focus on learning about the organisational dynamics, culture of collaboration and other fascinating aspects of the company they will be interning with”.  In his opinion, “to be able to navigate a successful career in the industry,” it is crucial to be aware of “potential impediments that may hinder effectiveness”.

Mishra further adds, “Effective time management is also vital, as interns may encounter situations where they face tight deadlines or the need to balance multiple responsibilities. Therefore, ample time and effort needs to be assigned to complete tasks with unwavering dedication, even if it means investing extra hours.”

    Hands-on experience

One of the most significant advantages of internships is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specific field or industry. Unlike traditional classroom learning, internships offer a dynamic environment where individuals can apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.

According to P Dwarakanath, former non-executive chairman, GSK, “Internships provide an opportunity to gain first-hand experience and observe the inner workings of a company. Through shadowing and active participation, interns can acquire valuable knowledge that serves as a bridge between their academic studies and the corporate world. It’s a crucial transition phase that helps them develop a practical understanding of business operations, cross-functional collaboration and the application of theoretical concepts in real-life scenarios.”

    Skill development

Internships serve as incubators for skill development. They allow individuals to acquire and enhance a wide range of skills that are highly valued in the professional world. From technical expertise to soft skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, internships provide an ideal setting to develop these competencies. The hands-on nature of internships encourages personal and professional growth, equipping individuals with the tools they need to succeed in their chosen career paths.

    Professional networking

Networking is an integral part of career advancement, and internships present an exceptional opportunity to expand one’s professional network. Interns often have the chance to interact with industry professionals, mentors and fellow interns who can provide guidance, advice and even open doors to future employment opportunities. These connections can prove invaluable as they offer insights into the industry, mentorship and references for future job applications.

Standing out in a competitive job market

“Through exposure to various sectors, interns can build a strong foundation and make informed decisions about their future paths, aligning their interests and skills for a successful career”

    A Thiru, C-suite HR professional

In today’s competitive job market, having practical experience is a vital asset. Internships significantly bolster resumes, making candidates more attractive to potential employers. The experience gained during an internship demonstrates initiative, adaptability and a willingness to learn. It can set individuals apart from other candidates, giving them a competitive edge when seeking future employment opportunities.

    Exploring career paths

Choosing the right career path can be a daunting task. Internships serve as a compass, guiding individuals towards a clearer understanding of their professional aspirations.

A Thiru, C-suite HR professional, suggests that completing internships in different industries offers interns the chance to evaluate and determine the best fit for their long-term career goals.

“Through exposure to various sectors, interns can build a strong foundation and make informed decisions about their future paths, aligning their interests and skills for a successful career,” says Thiru.

Mishra points out, “Taking advantage of an internship opportunity goes beyond merely fulfilling the requirements. It is an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the inner workings of the company and the industry as a whole. Interns should view their internship as a chance to broaden their knowledge and actively engage in tasks that contribute to their growth.”

“Internships provide an opportunity to gain first-hand experience and observe the inner workings of a company. Through shadowing and active participation, interns can acquire valuable knowledge that serves as a bridge between their academic studies and the corporate world.

P Dwarakanath, former non-executive chairman, GSK

“Interns who excel during their internship and receive positive assessments may even secure a permanent position within the company. This incentive is highly advantageous, as it eliminates the need for graduates to go through the struggle of job placement after completing their studies. Alternatively, even if a permanent position is not guaranteed, a successful internship can lead to being called for final interviews, increasing the chances of securing a job,” explains Dwarkanath.

Talking about things to keep in mind while taking up an internship, Thiru says many companies and colleges treat internships as routine exercises, but only a few truly explore the opportunity for reciprocal learning and pave the way for a transformative experience.

Internships hold immense power in shaping careers and unlocking growth opportunities. The practical experience gained, the skills developed, and the professional connections established through internships can pave the way for future success. While there are challenges to consider, such as limited compensation and time commitments, the long-term benefits often outweigh the drawbacks.
