Walmart is gearing to hire 50,000 workers in the US in about a month’s time. The American retailer is reportedly hiring workers for its clubs, corporate offices, stores and supply chain units by the end of this quarter. It has also simplified and reduced the hiring process for frontline workers to 24 hours.
It will also open new hubs for Walmart Global Tech, its tech firm, in Atlanta and Toronto. It plans to add about 5,000 people in the areas of cybersecurity, software engineering, data engineering, data science and so on, at Walmart Global Tech, which already has 15 hubs in the US, Mexico, India and Costa Rica.
In Atlanta alone, Walmart Global Tech expects to take on 140 full-time workers in the first phase of hiring. On the other hand, in Toronto, it plans to hire 45 full-time workers.
Walmart is in the process of building its online marketplace in the face of stiff competition from the likes of Amazon. It is working to further automate its distribution centres, obtain more self-driving delivery vehicles to its fleet, and also acquire tech startups such as Zeekit.
Amidst a very tight labour market, Walmart is offering hourly wage of $16.40 on average. Starting wage goes up to about $30 an hour for certain roles and regions.
Most of its existing managers in the US started off as hourly associates in its stores and clubs.
