    MCD bans teachers from striking

The Education Department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the Rohini zone has officially warned teachers and staff against participating in a strike or demonstrating, or criticising the department on social media. A directive issued on 22 January 2024, stated that strict action will be taken against any staff involved in such activities.

In a letter to all school heads, the Education Department instructed its employees to distance themselves from unrecognised associations. These associations were criticised for damaging the department’s reputation on social media and through interactions with the press.

Teachers and staff in MCD schools in the Rohini Zone were specifically advised not to take part in activities such as boycotting work, mass casual leave, or any events organised by these associations. The notice also mentioned that engaging in such activities goes against the CCS Conduct Rules of 1964.

The MCD’s Education Department banned strikes and criticism due to concerns raised in an audit report. The said audit report revealed that almost half (48.74 per cent) of students in MCD schools didn’t get financial benefits from 2016–17 to 2022–2023 because there were no bank accounts for fund distribution.

Previously, school headmasters used to receive funds and distribute them among students in MCD schools. To prevent misuse of funds, the government now directly deposits money into students’ bank accounts for things such as uniforms, school bags, scholarships and stationery.
