A tragic incident has unfolded at Delta Electronics Thailand, where a 30-year-old employee, May, lost her life after being denied sick leave. The incident, which occurred at an electronics manufacturing plant in Samut Prakan province, has sparked widespread concern about workplace conditions and employee rights in Thailand.
May had been suffering from a severe medical condition, inflamed large intestine, and was initially granted medical leave from September 5-9. However, as her condition deteriorated, she requested additional leave on the evening of September 12. Her manager, unfortunately, denied the request, insisting that she return to work with an updated medical certificate.
Fearing for her job security, May complied and returned to the factory the following day. Tragically, within 20 minutes of starting work, she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, she succumbed to complications related to necrotising enterocolitis.
Delta Electronics Thailand has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding May’s untimely demise. In a statement, the company’s CEO expressed deep sorrow and pledged to fully understand the situation while providing unwavering support to May’s family.
This incident has ignited discussions about work-life balance and employee welfare, with workplace-related deaths making headlines worldwide. A recent case of a corporate employee in EY Pune, India, further underscored the urgent need for reforms in workplace ethics and employee rights.
