The Delhi government has proposed an increase in the minimum monthly wages for skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers within the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Starting 1 April, 2024, all MCD workers will receive Dearness Allowance (DA). The proposal to raise minimum wages will be presented for approval at the upcoming MCD House meeting.
There’s a potential increase in monthly wages for workers in Delhi. Unskilled labourers may enjoy a raise from Rs 16,792 to Rs 17,234, as per an official statement, while skilled workers may see a raise of Rs 528 to Rs 20,903. Semi-skilled workers will get a hike of Rs 494, taking their wages to Rs 18,993 per month. This translates to a daily wage of Rs 574.47 for unskilled workers, Rs 633.10 for semi-skilled workers, and Rs 696.77 for skilled workers.
The MCD employees can expect the release of accumulated DA once the MCD House approves the proposal.
Additionally, the upcoming MCD House meeting will address the plans to increase minimum wages for clerical and supervisory staff. According to the proposal, the minimum salary for non-matriculate employees may be raised to Rs 18,993, for matriculates but not graduates to Rs 20,902, and for graduates and above to Rs 22,744. The proposed monthly Dearness Allowance for these categories is Rs 494, Rs 546, and Rs 598, respectively.
As per the Delhi Labour Ministry, the minimum wage for workers in Delhi is the highest in the country. The decision by the Delhi government is expected to benefit workers in various categories, including unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and others in scheduled employment. Additionally, the move aims to extend the benefit of DA, typically provided to state and central government employees, to individuals working on minimum wages in the unorganised sector.
