Haryana mandates 5-minute yoga break for workers in industrial units

State pushes daily wellness pause to boost employee health, productivity and workplace morale

The Haryana government has rolled out a new workplace-wellness initiative, directing industrial units across the state to introduce a daily 5-minute yoga break for employees.

Announced as part of the state’s employee health drive, the directive asks factories and manufacturing units to pause operations briefly each day so workers can participate in guided yoga and light stretching. Officials stated such a short “fitness dose” is aimed at reducing fatigue, preventing lifestyle-related illnesses, and improving focus on the shop floor.

Labour department authorities noted that long hours, repetitive tasks, and sedentary work patterns in industrial settings often lead to stress, back pain and low energy. A quick yoga interval, officials noted, can help counter those issues without disrupting production schedules.

The programme will be implemented in a phased manner. District labour officers have been asked to coordinate with industry associations and unit heads to schedule the break at a convenient time, preferably mid-shift. Basic yoga routines — including breathing exercises, neck and shoulder stretches, and simple asanas — will be recommended so workers of all fitness levels can take part.

State officials added that the initiative also supports the larger goal of building a healthier workforce and cutting down on absenteeism. Employers are being encouraged to display posters, play instructional audio, or rope in trained instructors to lead the sessions.

The move aligns with national efforts to promote preventive healthcare and work-life balance. Haryana joins a small but growing list of states experimenting with structured wellness minutes inside workplaces.

With manufacturing a key pillar of Haryana’s economy, the government hopes the five-minute practice will become a daily habit that improves both employee well-being and overall industrial output.
