The Company will train about 80 per cent of its workforce in digital technologies, such as Big Data analytics, cloud, mobility, Internet of Things (IoT), AR-VR, machine learning, robotics and bitcoin, by the end of 2018.

Tech Mahindra, the Indian multinational provider of IT, networking technology solutions and BPO services, is actively training its workforce affected by automation in the IT industry. The Company’s focus is on automation to increase competitiveness and reduce costs. For this, it has already trained 11000 employees in automation technologies, and will train an additional 10000 this year.

This training initiative comes in the wake of the recent heavy layoffs in the IT industry, due to automation. In the past few months, thousands of employees have been asked to leave by companies, such as Wipro, Infosys and Cognizant. The only way to escape such layoff is to reskill and be updated with the relevant skills and knowledge.

Tech Mahindra had a total employee count of 1,17,225 people at the end of September 2017, with 75,587 in the software business and 32,287 in BPO operations.

The Company claims to have trained about 70 per cent of the total employees—ranging from delivery to sales and support—by the end of September 2017. They were trained in digital technologies, such as Big Data analytics, cloud computing, mobility, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality /virtual reality (AR-VR), machine learning, robotics and bitcoin.

The Company plans to train about 80 per cent of the employees by the end of the financial year 2018.

The arrival of newer technologies, such as automation and artificial intelligence, are helping increase the productivity of businesses and cutting costs, but also leading to a reduction in the number of jobs.

However, the technological advancement is also creating new opportunities in the area of tech startups, e-commerce, Digital India, digital payments, and so on. Around three million new jobs are expected to be created in these areas by 2025.
