As part of its diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiative, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has taken on 46 women to be part of its operations at the Oragadam truck and bus manufacturing factory, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The programme, which is called ‘DiveIN’, aims to make the Company’s workforce more diverse and inclusive. The recently-hired women will be working on the shop floor, paint shop, as well as in the areas of quality management, engine and transmission, cab trim, cabin-in-white, and paint shop. The move will help increase the ratio of women in the manufacturing unit and create a more gender-balanced workforce.

The goal is to have 20 per cent women in the workforce by 2022, by consciously creating a work environment that is professional, and safe for and supportive of women.

The German truck manufacturing company has already ensured that crèche facilities, adequate restrooms and changing rooms and medical facilities for women are in place at the plant.

A complaint redressal system has also been put in place to address issues pertaining to sexual harassment or gender discrimination, if any, without any delay.

All new recruits are made to undergo safety training, as well as training on health, hygiene and firefighting. The newcomers are also given training on how to handle basic tools and how to develop communication skills, as part of the onboarding process.
