TCS hires 20,000, achieves headcount of 5 lakh

The workforce strength of Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) has managed to cross the five lakh mark, post the hiring of 20,000 people in the first quarter of 2021-22. This brings the total headcount to about 5,09,058. In 2020, TCS hired about 40,000 freshers from campuses and intends to continue the trend this year too.

Having hired at least 2,000 trainees from campuses in the US last year, TCS hopes to cross that number this year too. It takes TCS about three months to get a fresh hire trained and prepared to go live on a project.

The Company is also looking at having its workforce fully vaccinated by September. That means, the 5 lakh plus employees of the Indian information technology multinational will get the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in two months’ time.

Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO, TCS, revealed that once the employees get their second jab, they “will be getting back to the office on a more regular basis.”

This ‘return to office’ move is part of the Company’s 25×25 vision, wherein only 25 per cent of the workforce will be present physically in the office for only 25 per cent of the time. However, this vision will be achieved in a step-by-step and structured way, starting with getting back to the “regular operating model” first.

A good number of employees in the Company were desirous of returning to office, but the second wave instilled some fear and a lot more uncertainty about the future.
