The Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme has given employment to one lakh people in Rajasthan in less than a week after its launch on 9 September 2022.

Job cards for more than 2.45 lakh families have been created with the names of over 3.8 lakh people. Till now, over 1.39 lakh have sought jobs, of which a lakh have already been given a source of livelihood.

Jobs are being given immediately as per demand.

The scheme is similar to that of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA), and aims to ensure 100 days of employment, annually, to needy families in urban areas. Those not less than 18 and not more than 60 years of age are eligible for employment. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had announced the scheme during the Rajasthan state budget.

The fixed wage of unskilled labourers will be Rs 259 per day, while skilled workers can expect Rs 283 a day. Wages will be deposited directly into the bank accounts of the workers within the stated time period.

A budget of Rs 800 crore has been allocated this year itself, and the state government has said that adequate funds will be set aside for the scheme.

The scheme will comprise projects pertaining to conservation ? of heritage, environment, water, and so on ? and maintenance of parks and gardens, elimination of encroachments and illegal banners, hoardings and sign boards, as well as sanitation work.
