    Minimum wage in Sikkim hiked to Rs 500

    The new rates would be effective from July 11, 2022, and the labourers will be given arrears

    The Government of Sikkim has hiked minimum wage by 67 per cent, from Rs 300 to Rs 500. That means, even unskilled workers will be able to earn at least Rs 15,000 in 30 days.

    The new wage will come into retrospective effect from 11 July, 2022, as per Labour Minister Lok Nath Sharma.

    Semi-skilled workers will now be able to earn a daily wage of Rs 520 as compared to the Rs 320 that they used to earn earlier. Skilled workers who used to earn Rs 335 a day before, will now earn Rs 535 a day.

    The high-skilled workers, on the other hand, will now earn Rs 565 per day instead of the earlier Rs 365 a day.

    These revised wages will be applicable for all workers employed at altitudes of up to 8,000 feet. Those working at altitudes beyond 8,000 feet, and up to 12,000 feet, will get 50 per cent more wages.

    Additionally, 75 per cent more wages than the normal will be given to workers employed at altitudes beyond 12,000 feet and up to 16,000 feet.

    Double the normal wage will be paid to those working above 16,000 feet.

    The revision comes into retrospective effect from 11 July, 2022, and therefore, workers stand to receive arrears.
