After the cases of an EY Pune’s audit and assurance executive and of a deputy VP from HDFC bank, Lucknow, now a techie working with HCL Tech in Nagpur has died of cardiac arrest.
Nitin Edwin Michael, who worked with HCL Tech, Nagpur, as a senior analyst, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed in the washroom of the office on Friday evening. While he was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, he was declared brought dead.
The company has expressed condolence and also assured all the required support to Michael’s wife and six-year old son.
All of 40 years, Michael’s death has put the spotlight on the growing incidents of cardiac arrests in young employees, in all likelihood due to their work pressure and associated lifestyle.
Michael’s death comes close on the heels of the death of an additional deputy vice-president at HDFC Bank, Lucknow, who fainted and fell off her chair in the cafeteria of the office. She was also in her early 40s.
These deaths come at a time when the case of Anna Sebastian, the EY employee who lost her life to extreme work pressure is still fresh in the minds of people.
Earlier this month, an employee of Wells Fargo had died at her desk and was discovered only four days later. While the company maintains that she worked in that part of the office where most team members were working from home or remotely, the fact remains that the said employee must have been a loner since nobody came looking for her either.
It is time for organisations to act and be more involved in the mental and physical health of their employees.
