Google has announced a voluntary exit programme for employees in its Platforms & Devices division. This programme is available to US-based employees working on Android (Auto, TV, Wear OS, XR), Chrome, ChromeOS, Google Photos, Google One, Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest.
The initiative was communicated through a memo. The memo confirmed that the programme does not extend to other divisions such as Search or AI. The move comes a year after the company merged its Pixel hardware and Android software teams into one unit.
The merger of Pixel and Android created a large organisation with overlapping responsibilities. Over the past months, employees have gained clarity on their roles. Some raised concerns about the lack of voluntary exit options in past restructuring efforts. Google’s new programme addresses this by allowing employees who are struggling with role adjustments or hybrid work requirements to leave with a severance package.
The exit programme is framed as a way for employees to evaluate their alignment with the organisation’s mission. Google wants a workforce that is fully committed to building high-quality products efficiently.
Google stated that the voluntary exit programme is not tied to any product strategy changes. The company’s hardware division had already undergone structural adjustments last year, switching to a functional organisation model across Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit. Some roles were eliminated at the time.
The broader integration in April aimed to accelerate decision-making within the company. With this new exit programme, Google seeks to streamline operations further while maintaining momentum in its product- development efforts. Employees opting to leave will receive severance, with details to be provided internally.
