Strikes across India highlight worker demands

India is witnessing a wave of worker protests across different sectors, each pointing to long standing HR challenges around pay, contracts and working conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, more than 50,000 National Health Mission (NHM) employees gathered in Lucknow demanding permanent jobs and equal pay. Nurses, doctors and health officers said they perform the same duties as permanent staff but earn far less—some as little as Rs12,000 compared with Rs 60,000 or more for regular employees. Contractual doctors reported earning Rs 40,000– Rs 45,000 while permanent colleagues make up to Rs 2 lakh. Workers also highlighted the burden of multiple online tasks and the lack of recognition for their service during the Covid 19 pandemic. The strike has disrupted patient admissions and services, underlining the risks when frontline healthcare staff feel undervalued.

In Chandigarh, Panjab University’s multitasking staff staged their third protest in six months over delayed salaries. Earning just Rs10,000–Rs 12,000 a month, many said payments are often held up for two to three months, forcing them to borrow money to cover household expenses. Workers also raised concerns about decades long contractual employment without regularisation, and alleged gender based wage disparities. These issues highlight how salary delays and insecure contracts erode trust and morale among essential campus staff.

Meanwhile, in Delhi, sanitation workers faced mounting pressure as protests in central areas generated over 300 tonnes of waste daily. The New Delhi Municipal Council had to increase staff deployment by 50 per cent to manage the clean up. Workers reported damage to public infrastructure and heavy workloads during the protest period, showing how civic employees often bear the hidden costs of unrest.

Together, these protests reveal a common theme: employees across sectors are demanding fair pay, timely salaries and secure contracts. Ignoring these basics risks not only workforce morale but also service delivery in critical areas such as healthcare, education and public sanitation.
